Gosforth Golf Club –
“The Bridle Path” Gosforth Golf Club has often been described as ‘hidden away in the leafy suburbs’ and ‘one of the region’s hidden gems’ These are descriptions that our members are incredibly proud of – and rightly so!
The history of our Club has been one of evolvement, development and design which culminated in our Centenary celebrations in 2006. In 1906, play originally commenced on a 9-hole course and, within two years, membership had doubled and the course extended to 18 holes. The course has seen a number of layout changes in its 100+ years and our ground staff are regularly commended for the constant excellent year long condition – recent weather permitting! This has been helped by the installation of an irrigation system and when over 7,000 trees were planted Our course is a popular one for golfers of all abilities; members include our immediate neighbours, residents of Gosforth and surrounding suburbs of Newcastle and a number that travel to the City to take advantage of the challenging course.
Each year we have many visitors who return again and again to put their own skill to the test in this leafy parkland setting. We are proud to have hosted a number of County events and to have hosted many corporate golf days. Set in some 90 acres, ours is a course of immense character; the setting is tranquil and scenic and there are times when even local wildlife call in to inspect the course. The course itself is quite flat, is a relatively easy walk and, in comparison to many, a fairly short one.
The Ouse Burn is a major feature of Gosforth Golf Course and runs the length of the course, winding its way down the 18th and through the 4th on its way to the Tyne. Avoiding this can be a test of its own! Our signature hole is, undoubtedly the 18th, at 432 yards from the medal tee and has often been referred to as the “one of the toughest finishing holes in our region”.In 2007, the popular Golf North East magazine referred to our course as “a great test of your golfing ability”.
Our resident PGA Professional is Graham Garland and he will be happy to answer any queries you may have about our Club. Graham will be happy to give you a tour of the Club, its grounds, facilities and, of course, his well stocked shop.
Of course it’s not just about the golf. We have excellent facilities and a friendly atmospheric Clubhouse where views are amazing – both from the ground floor and the 1st floor dining room where the views of the Course’s closing holes are breathtaking. Our catering is of the highest standard; our chef trained at some of the region’s most acclaimed restaurants. Our social calendar is always busy and always enjoyed. We have social nights that range from themed, live music, gourmet dinner evenings and quizzes. Contact us at 0191 – 285 0553 or via www.gosforthgolfclub.co.uk
